Play With Precision: Flute Playing Techniques To Improve Your Performance

About Me
kids and music - changing their lives

Some kids grow up loving music. From the time they are in their mother's womb, the sound of music soothes them and brings them joy. My daughter has always loved all kinds of music. When she was in my belly, I put all kinds of music on and placed a pair of headphones on my belly. The different types of music would produce different results - calming music soothed her and lively music made her active. Now that she is four, she is beginning to explore different instruments. If you have a child that loves music, this blog can help you find ways to expose him or her to continue learning about music.

If you've been taking flute lessons, your teacher has probably already introduced the basics of playing the instrument. This includes learning proper breathing techniques and understanding how to make good use of air pressure when playing the instrument.

These fundamentals are important for aspiring flutists as they form the foundation for building more advanced techniques. Here are some flute playing techniques for you to explore in your flute lessons and practice to improve your performance.

Vibrato

Flute vibrato is an engaging effect that can take your flute playing to the next level. This technique involves continually fluctuating a note's pitch and intensity, making it sound more dynamic and full of character.

It is produced by adjusting the pressure you apply when blowing into the instrument. When practiced properly, vibrato can help to bring life and emotion to your performance.

Among the most important aspects of learning how to properly use vibrato in flute playing is to be aware of your air stream speed. If your air stream is too slow, you will not get enough vibration in your tone. On the other hand, if you blow with too much force or speed, you risk distorting the volume or pitch of the note you are playing.

A good starting point for refining your control over this technique is to practice at various volumes and speeds — from low-intensity notes that don't require a lot of air pressure to louder notes that demand precision in execution. This way, you'll gradually get a better understanding of how to apply the right pressure and speed at different levels.

Legato

Legato is a technique that helps you to create smoother transitions between notes, creating a more lyrical sound. The key here is to use your air pressure to keep the notes connected as you go up or down the scale.

When playing legato, ensure that you maintain an even pressure when playing the notes. If you intentionally change the air pressure between notes, it will break up the connection and make your transitions sound choppy.

Among the best ways to master this technique is to practice a series of short exercises that allow you to focus on legato in isolation. Start by playing two or three notes one after another and try to connect them as seamlessly as possible. As you become more comfortable with it, gradually increase the number of consecutive notes within each exercise.

When you understand these flute playing techniques and consistently practice them during your lessons, you can take your flute performances to a whole new level! Ultimately, with patience and dedication, you'll be able to produce more expressive, engaging music with your flute.
